The backstory:
Living close to the ocean, on foggy mornings or cool evenings the odor of salt water makes its way across the hills and settles in the valley close by. The smell of ocean air makes me long for the sandy beach and warm sunshine. I imagine the children running with the waves, and building sand castles in the sand, bikers and skateboarders riding along the bike path, and volley ball players hitting balls back and forth.
In Long Beach, a yearly bike race brings out thousands of participants and visitors. One year I was invited by the California Art Club to participate in their “plein air” event during the race. The only stipulation was to put a bike in the painting. This piece is one of two pieces I completed at the event. Can you smell the salty air?
