During September 2008, I was invited to demonstrate my art process and display my work at the Millard Sheets Gallery on the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds. On several occasions after night had fallen, I ventured out into the fun zone and began studying the night scenery. Most people passing by me were unaware of my presence, as they themselves became part of the excitement of the night. One such evening, I discovered a discrete place to set up my easel in front of the “Fun Zone” and began this 24x36 inch painting. Large spotlights shown down on the passersby while the carnival lights glittered all around. The colorful lights, the ferris wheel, the ticket booth, the vendors selling their wares, the smells and sounds all became almost overwhelming. The couples walking by, the families buying their treats, the security guard in the foreground, and the merchant watching his customers pass him by all became elements of my final painting. With the beginning under-painting and reference pictures from my handy-dandy Nikon D40, I finally wrapped up this painting 6 months later.
Where is your heart's desire? What is your mission? Where is YOUR Fun Zone? Be still and search. The answer is within.
