“Title : “Through the Looking Glass - Self Portrait”- Oil Pastel on Paper - 24” x 18”
Who are you
Inside this mirrored frame?
Are you this woman?
What is your name?
Have I forgotten to look within
At the beauty I’ve been given?
Where are the blessings?
Are they hidden?
Still the mind.
Relax the body.
To self be kind.
Believe.
The Backstory:
Another self portrait began as a classroom assignment during a life drawing class in 2006. A little makeup mirror was held up in front of me while I painted the woman in the mirror. These were hard years. My older daughters were becoming young, independent women, while my youngest (with Autism), still remained a child in a teen’s body. Hormones were at the forefront, and the home was chaotic. I was exhausted. The only way to balance my heart was to immerse myself in my Art. Finding a class at a local community college helped me both mentally and physically. In this piece,my 3 daughters are portrayed in the background. My husband’s portrait is placed behind them as he watches on and supports our family. I finished this piece 6 years later, after placing my youngest in a crisis home. Four years after living in different group homes, she returned to live with us again.
These are the days of our life.
After all, it’s a beautiful life.
