The backstory:

The inspiration for this painting was from a sculpture depicting Apollo and Daphne (from Greek Mythology).

“The myth of Orpheus and Eurydiceis one of the most famous and beloved Greek myths. A myth about love and passion, and also about the weaknesses of the human spirit.” (https://www.greekmyths-greekmythology.com/orpheus-and-eurydice/)

The original sculpture stands in the sculpture gardens at the Huntington Library in San Marino. An unknown French sculpture created the original sculpture in the 18th century. True love.
