“Oh Tom, my dear, my friend.

You heard me coming through the gate.

You were my pal.

You understood.

You weren’t scared by my squeals

I was warmed by your smooth coat.

I looked in your eyes.

You walked gently.

I remember you.

Thank you for being my friend”

The Backstory:

This painting highlights my daughter during therapy on her favorite horse.

When she was young, we got involved in horse vaulting. Horse vaulting gained its recognition in the States for its qualities of sensory integration and is a popular therapy utilized by the disabled population to stimulate the senses, and therefore, help the brain mature. My autistic daughter was calmed by the movement, and learned to ride backward and stand on the horse with the help of Rick, her coach.

This poem is my own interpretation of her thoughts and words … though none were spoken.

After all, it’s a beautiful life.
